Hello, I'm Sonja!

I'm a board certified health and wellness coach (NBC-HWC), a financial social work coach, a learning and development professional, and a behavior change expert with 14 years of experience helping people change their lives through the power of coaching.

I’m really into helping people figure out their values so they can  live intentional and unapologetic lives that they don’t need to escape from.

I've got a thing for simplifying the complex, helping clients find clarity in the chaos and purpose in the process, and turning overwhelm into clear, manageable action steps.

When I'm not working, you can find me hiking in the mountains, snapping photos of everyday moments, reading next to an open window with a mug of tea, listening to a podcast while walking my dog, advocating for environmental policy changes that protect people and the planet, experiencing gratitude for the simple things in life, or searching for the best pastries (If you have bakery/pastry recommendations for anywhere in the world, I want to hear them*) !!

I'm that coworker who secretly kiiiind of likes it when the boss makes us go around the room and share fun facts about ourselves at the beginning of a meeting. Here are some of mine!

→ I'm an enneagram type 1w2 - My superpowers are being super organized and extremely compassionate. This makes me a pro at helping you untangle the facts and the feelings of whatever's keeping you stuck.

→ My first job was working as a seamstress designing and sewing costumes for theatre productions. I loved sewing, but my favorite part of the job was cataloging the massive costume closet in the attic of the theatre - I love to organize messy spaces!

→ I freaking love dinosaurs. I will never stop reading articles about new paleontological discoveries, being excited about seeing dinosaur skeletons in museums, hiding tiny dinosaur toys in all my houseplants, and seeing the new Jurassic Park movies in the theatre.

→ My favorite place to vacation is in a US National Park (my favorites are Zion and Glacier!). I love hiking, but camping is nottt for me.

→ I LOVE systems. One of my favorite things to do is to listen to your unique challenges, understand the way you learn and process information, and then co-design a custom system that will help you solve your problem.

→ I studied abroad in Malta when I was in college. I've been fortunate enough to travel to Malta, Gozo, Italy, Spain, Ireland, Turkey, Egypt, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, Mexico, and 21 US states. My next destination is Anchorage, Alaska!

→ I thought I was the biggest spreadsheet nerd the world had ever seen.... And then I met my husband. He builds spreadsheets that would blow your mind and has been known to flirt with me in the margins of our shared travel planning spreadsheet.

→ I wholeheartedly believe that perfectionism can be a superpower when you learn how to use it for good. I also celebrate the heck out of ambitious, confident, assertive women in this space.

→ In coaching, we use your values to help guide the process of change and build a life you don't need to escape from. My values are curiosity, integrity, authenticity, creativity, initiative, simplicity, and uniqueness.

Coaching Experience

I'm a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) and a Financial Social Work Coach with 7 coaching certifications and over 5,000 hours of coaching experience. I've helped thousands of people figure out their lives over 14 years of coaching in 1:1 and group sessions across private practice, small businesses, and corporate wellness settings.

Private Practice Coaching Experience

I earned my first coaching certification in 2011 and put my coaching skills into practice during a year as an AmeriCorps Service Member, where I worked as the school wellness coordinator for 4 rural school districts in Northeast Iowa. I later opened up a private coaching practice in Decorah, Iowa, which I ran for 2 years before moving to Minneapolis in 2014. Since 2011, I've coached hundreds of clients, published coaching workbooks and eBooks, recorded podcast interviews, taught group coaching workshops, mentored other coaches, coached business owners and executives, and designed coaching tools for my Etsy shop.

Corporate Coaching Experience

My corporate health coaching experience started in 2015 with a job coaching people on how to improve their biometric screening numbers by making sustainable lifestyle changes around nutrition, exercise, stress, and sleep during 15-minute telephonic consultations. Over the next 4 years, I coached clients in 15, 20, and 30-minute telephonic coaching conversations. As I developed my coaching style and continued pursuing additional certifications, I expanded my coaching topics to include things like career coaching, coaching around passion and purpose, money coaching, relationship coaching, business and executive coaching.

Consulting Experience

In 2022, I took on the role of Director of Learning and Development for a consulting firm in the professional beauty industry. There, I co-developed a financial wellness program for salon and spa businesses and delivered the program's kickoff keynote to cosmetology students and professionals all over the country. I also managed and co-authored an industry-wide data collaboration project to help educate legislators on the economic opportunities in the professional beauty industry. This included creating several keynote presentations, which were presented on stages at professional conferences all over the US. It also included co-authoring a 100-page report about our findings, which was presented at the US Capitol and to the US Chief Economist at The White House.

My consulting work also includes extensive project management, product development, and custom operations experience for a variety of clients. My past clients include individual solopreneurs, small businesses, salons and spas, health and wellness startups, public media companies, and corporate organizations.

I currently work with 2 health tech startups in the coaching space.

Education Experience

In 2019, I became the Training Manager for a team of 300 health coaches. I co-developed an 8-week new hire training program and trained over 200 new hire health coaches entering the field. This internal coach training program became an approved training program through the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) in January 2022.

In 2020, I developed a supplemental internal training program that taught coaches how to coach on financial wellbeing as part of a whole person approach to wellness. Between 2020-2022, I trained over 50 coaches on the topic.

From 2022-2023, I worked at the Director of Learning and Development for a small consulting firm developing financial literacy and coaching curriculum for cosmetology students and salon and spa professionals.

I currently work as a Faculty Instructor for AFPA’s NBHWC-approved training program, sit on the board for San Diego Mesa College's NBHWC-Approved Training Program, give guest lectures for various programs, offer an NBHWC Board Exam Prep Course for students studying for the exam, and teach CEU Courses for NBC-HWCs.

Let's Work Together

Hello, friend, I'm so glad you're here! Here's how I can support you

Coaching

I help people build authentic, intentional, and unapologetic lives that they don't need to escape from through the power of coaching.

My life's work is helping you untangle life’s chaos with clarity and purpose, so you don’t have to navigate the messy, overwhelming, and complicated parts of life alone.

I want to show you that navigating life with the right support can help you grow into the most vibrant, peaceful, content, and aligned version of yourself (even if your life feels totally overwhelming, chaotic, and disorganized right now).

Consulting

I offer project-based training consulting for solopreneurs, small businesses, start ups, and corporate wellness teams so you can get your project done without hiring a full-time learning and development professional.

I'm really into making high quality consulting available without the big price tag or the long timelines. I know how hard it is to find a professional you actually want to work with, can trust with the details of your project, AND will teach you how to DIY it moving forward. If you're looking for all 3 of those things, I'm your girl!

Education

I'm a behavior change nerd who's passionate about leveling up the professional credibility of the coaching industry, providing high quality coaching to my clients, and helping out coaching professionals along the way.

I offer 3 education opportunities for coaches: A self-guided NBHWC-Board Exam Prep Course for future NBC-HWCs studying for their board exam, coaching skill-development and mentorship sessions for new coaches, and high-quality continuing education courses for NBC-HWCs who are looking to deepen and enhance their coaching skills.
