Most coaches don't think about business insurance until a big client asks for proof of coverage before they'll sign a contract..... and they have to scramble to figure out what that even means and how to get a policy fast. Ask me how I know. π
This is the post I wish someone had handed me when I was starting out β Here's what you need to know about insurance as a coach and/or consultant!
What is business insurance β and what kinds do coaches need?
There are two types of business insurance that matter most for health and wellness coaches and consultants.
General Liability Insurance
General liability insurance protects you if a third party β a client, a vendor, a visitor β makes a claim against your business for bodily injury, property damage, or personal injury. Think: a client trips and falls during an in-person session, or something is damaged in a space you're using for a workshop.
If you're coaching entirely virtually, general liability can feel less urgent, but it's still the baseline coverage that most contracts and venues require before they'll work with you. Many corporate clients and conference organizers will ask for a Certificate of Insurance proving you carry general liability before they'll sign anything.
Errors and Omissions Insurance (E&O) / Professional Liability
Errors and omissions insurance β also called professional liability insurance β protects you if a client claims that your professional services caused them financial harm or failed to deliver what was promised. This is the coverage specifically designed for service-based professionals like coaches and consultants.
As a coach, your work involves real guidance on real goals in real people's lives. As a consultant, you're making professional recommendations that businesses act on. E&O coverage protects you if that work is ever disputed.
Why coaches specifically need business insurance
I'll be honest: I didn't have business insurance for many years of running my private practice. I didn't think I needed it because I had a solid Coaching Agreement and I wasn't doing anything that felt particularly risky.
Here's what I didn't fully understand at the time:
Coaching is a professional service. Any time you offer professional services for money, there is the possibility β however remote β of a dispute about whether those services delivered what was expected. Insurance doesn't mean you did something wrong. It means you're protected if something goes sideways.
Corporate and organizational clients often require it. If you want to work with companies, consult with health tech startups, speak at conferences, or be brought in by organizations to deliver coaching or training, you will almost certainly be asked to provide proof of insurance. Not having it might mean losing the contract.
It's a sign that you take your business seriously. Having business insurance is one of the markers of a legitimate professional practice, alongside a coaching agreement, a defined scope of practice, and proper credentials. It signals to clients and partners that you're operating at a professional level.
Why consultants need it too
If you offer any kind of consulting β business strategy, coaching operations, curriculum development, product design, anything where you're making professional recommendations that an organization acts on β E&O coverage is particularly important.
Consulting work involves giving advice that has business consequences. If a client ever claims that your recommendations led to a negative outcome, professional liability insurance is what protects you. The claim doesn't have to be valid to cost you time, money, and stress to defend.
Why I chose ERGO Next
I use ERGO Next for my business insurance β and I recommend it to coaches because it was built specifically with small business owners and solopreneurs in mind.
Here's what I like about it:
It's fast. You can get a quote and be covered in under 15 minutes entirely online. No agent calls, no paperwork, no waiting. For coaches who are used to figuring things out on their own and don't want to spend a week navigating a complicated insurance process, this matters.
It's affordable. General liability coverage starts at $19/month. For most solo coaches, the total annual cost of business insurance through ERGO Next is genuinely modest β especially relative to the peace of mind and the professional credibility it provides.
It's built for service-based businesses. ERGO Next covers over 1,300 types of businesses, including consultants, fitness and wellness professionals, and educators β all of which apply to what health coaches do. You can select coverage that's tailored to your actual work rather than a generic policy that may not reflect your practice.
It's easy to manage. Everything is handled online β your policy, your Certificate of Insurance, any updates you need to make. If a corporate client asks for proof of insurance, you can pull your certificate immediately without calling anyone or waiting for paperwork.
It has excellent reviews. ERGO Next is rated 4.7/5 across thousands of customer reviews and has been recognized as Best Small Business Insurer and Best Online Experience. It's a legitimate, well-regarded insurance provider that happens to be designed for people running businesses like ours.
How to get started
Getting covered takes about 10 minutes. You'll answer a few questions about your business, choose your coverage type, and get your Certificate of Insurance immediately.

If you're a solo health coach or consultant just setting up your practice, General Liability is the place to start. If you're doing consulting work β especially with corporate clients or health tech companies β adding Errors and Omissions coverage is worth the additional cost.
The bottom line
Business insurance is one of those things that feels optional until it isn't. Setting it up takes less time than most of the other things on your business launch checklist, and it's one of the most straightforward ways to signal that your practice is professional, protected, and ready to work with clients and organizations at any level.
If you're a health coach or consultant without business insurance, this is your nudge to fix that today.
