How to Get Clients for Your Coaching Business
- Sonja Ecklund, NBC-HWC
And why the answer to this question is way more complex than you think
This is one of the questions I get most often from coaches — and I want to be super upfront and honest with you about something before I answer it:
There is no quick answer.
I know that's not what you want to hear. But I think you deserve honesty more than you deserve a listicle that makes client acquisition sound simpler than it is.
Here's the real answer: getting clients consistently requires a comprehensive strategy — one that connects your positioning, your branding, your messaging, your marketing, your systems, and your sales process into something that works together rather than in disconnected pieces. Building that strategy takes time and it takes learning a skill set that your coach training program almost certainly didn't cover.
So if you're currently trying to figure out how to get started finding clients for your coaching business, here are a few things worth understanding as a starting point.
The problem usually isn't what coaches think it is
Most coaches who are struggling to get clients assume they have a marketing problem. They think they need more content, a better website, a bigger following, or to spend a bunch of money on ads.
Usually the problem is upstream from marketing. The most common culprits are:
Unclear positioning. If you can't articulate specifically who you help and what problem you solve — in one or two sentences, in your ideal client's language — no marketing strategy is going to save you.
Inconsistency. Building trust with an audience takes longer than most coaches expect. The coaches who get clients are almost always the ones who kept showing up online in the places where their ideal clients hang out.
Avoidance of selling. If making offers and being visible feels uncomfortable or misaligned with your values, then it's time to do some work to examine that discomfort. A coaching practice that nobody can find or understand doesn't help anyone.
Where first clients actually come from
Your first clients are almost never going to come from strangers on the internet. They're going to come from people who already know you — from your online network, from friend/family/colleague referrals, and from relationships you've built over time.
Before you invest in content strategy or social media presence, invest in telling the people around you — specifically and clearly — that you're taking clients, who you work with, and what kinds of results you can help people achieve. That's the biggest thing any new coach can do to start acquiring new clients.
The honest truth about building this
Getting clients isn't a trick or a hack. It's the result of getting clear on what you're offering and who it's for, showing up consistently over time, building something that speaks to a specific kind of person and a specific kind of problem, and making genuine offers to real people.
It's also a set of absolutely learnable skills, even if it feels completely foreign to you right now.

Hi, I'm Sonja!
Hi, I'm Sonja! I'm a board certified health and wellness coach (NBC-HWC), a financial social work coach, a learning and development professional, and a behavior change expert with 15 years of experience helping people change their lives through the power of coaching.
I wholeheartedly believe that life is editable. Most of us think our habits, patterns, and setbacks are permanent, but with the right guidance, you can rewrite your story at any stage. That’s what we'll focus on through my high-touch 1:1 coaching programs, The Behavior Edit and The Business Edit.
I guide my coaching clients through a proven framework I call EDIT:
Experiment: Test small, safe changes in your behavior without fear of failure.
Design: Create intentional systems that actually fit your life, not someone else’s.
Implement: Take meaningful action in the real world, even when life is messy.
Trust: Build confidence in your ability to course-correct anytime.
Through this process, my clients:
Complete projects or goals they’ve been avoiding for years.
Stop procrastinating and regain control over their habits and routines.
Gain confidence that they can edit their behavior and rewrite their story whenever needed.
Move from feeling stuck and overwhelmed to empowered and in action.
