What It's Like to Work With Me as a Coach Mentor
- Sonja Ecklund, NBC-HWC
Who it's for, what we work on, and how to know if it's the right fit
One of the questions I get most often from coaches — right after "how do I get clients?" and "how do I pass the board exam?" — is some version of this:
Is there someone I can just talk to? Someone who knows this field, has built this kind of career, and can help me think through what I'm navigating right now?
The answer is yes. That's what coach mentoring is.
What coach mentoring actually is
Coach mentoring is an hour with someone who knows this field from the inside — who has built a coaching practice, trained coaches, worked as a hiring manager, helped coaches pass their board exams, and navigated most of the challenges you're currently facing — and who will spend that hour focused entirely on whatever is most alive for you right now.
You bring the questions. We work through them together.
Who reaches out for mentoring
The coaches who book sessions with me tend to fall into a few different categories:
The newer coach who just finished training and is trying to figure out what comes next. Should they sit for the board exam? How do they find their first clients? What does a professional coaching practice actually need to have in place before they see their first client? These are real questions with real answers, and having someone who has been there walk you through them is worth a lot more than piecing it together from blog posts and Facebook groups.
The coach preparing for the board exam who wants more than a study guide. They want to talk through the content, practice scenario questions out loud, understand the strategy behind the exam, and get feedback on where their gaps are. One focused session can clarify more than weeks of solo studying.
The coach who is job hunting and wants honest, inside-track feedback on their resume, their cover letter, or how they're showing up in applications and interviews. I've been a hiring manager and I know what the application looks like from the other side — I'll tell you directly what's working and what isn't.
The experienced coach who has been practicing for a while and wants a thinking partner for a specific challenge — a stuck client, a session they're not sure how to navigate, a business decision they're working through, a transition they're trying to make. Experience doesn't mean you stop having questions. It means your questions get more specific and more interesting.
What we might work on
Sessions are flexible and client-directed, but here's a sense of what coaches typically bring:
Coaching skills. Reviewing a session recording or transcript together. Practicing motivational interviewing or specific OARS skills. Working through a client scenario that's been puzzling you. Getting feedback on how you're showing up in sessions and what to develop next.
Board exam preparation. Understanding what the exam actually tests and how to study for it strategically. Working through practice questions together. Identifying gaps and building a realistic study plan for the weeks ahead.
Career development. Resume and cover letter review. Interview preparation. Understanding what hiring managers are looking for in a health coaching candidate. Figuring out which direction makes the most sense — employment, private practice, or building both simultaneously.
What makes this different from just Googling it
You can find a lot of information about all of these topics online. What you can't find online is someone who will apply that information specifically to your situation — your resume, your session, your client, your business at its current stage.
The value of a mentoring session isn't information. It's perspective. It's someone who has seen a lot of coaches navigate this exact thing, who can tell you what they see when they look at your specific situation, and who will be honest with you about what's working and what isn't.
That's a different thing than reading another blog post. And it's worth an hour.
How it works
Sessions are 60 minutes, booked as single sessions — no package commitment required. Before we meet, you'll fill out a brief intake form so I know what you're working through and we can make the most of our time together.
We meet via Google Meet or phone. You bring whatever's on your mind and we work through it.
